Information about Genealogy Research:
The library receives many requests for genealogy research by phone, e-mail, and postal mail. Our staff is not able to fulfill these requests due to the time-consuming nature of the research; however, we are fortunate to have as volunteers experienced local genealogists who will research family names in our Heritage Room. There is a fee for this service, with all proceeds benefiting the library; the researchers generously donate their time and expertise.
The initial search fee (covering 2 hours of research, detailed reply letter, and up to 10 pages of copies of materials) is $20.00 per family name. Copies in excess of those included in the search fee will be .30 cents per page.
If you are interested in this service, please print out the Order Form for Genealogy Research or send a letter stating the name you wish to learn about along with any details which will help our researcher identify the correct family line, such as dates of birth, death or marriage, spouse or children’s names or locations across time. Please specify if there are particular facts or details you are especially trying to uncover. Send your form or letter along with a check made out to the Ashe County Public Library, 148 Library Drive, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
We ask that you please be patient once you’ve submitted your request. Our researchers are volunteers who wish to do a careful, thorough job for you.
Out-of-town visitors and local residents alike are welcome to visit the Heritage Room to conduct their own research. Use of the collection is free, and a Heritage Room orientation is available during regular library hours.
Anyone with an interest in Ashe County’s history will find the Heritage Room worth a visit!
